For those of you on the East Coast of the USA, if you're attending Otakon, YOU'RE QUITE LUCKY!

Shinkai will be appearing as a Guest at this year's Otakon!

Otakon takes place at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland during the weekend of July 29th-31st. I believe current registration for the whole weekend is $75 (no single day passes).

Fan Letter Address
Today on Shinkai's Twitter, he posted this:

Someone had asked him where they could send their fan letter to because they were unable to attend his event. He said that they could send it to him in care of CoMixWave Films, and it would reach him.

I checked the site, and it's both in English and Japanese.

For those in Japan that wish to write to him:

For those not in Japan that wish to write to him:

News on Shinkai's next project

"The new work will be his longest animation film to date, and the story will revolve around one heroine, a cheerful and spirited girl. Shinkai noted that most of his works in the past decade were stories about characters who have to part ways with those they hold dear, but he wants to take that theme even further. Through the new heroine, Shinkai is planning to deal more specifically on how to overcome that loss."

So who's excited? :D

Is there any kind of news regarding a new film by Makoto Shinkai? I'm such a fan, and I've seen all his films but Voices of a Distant Star. Are there even any rumors floating around?

It is panfandom.
Yet again, Doctor Who fandom (particularly the, er, meme of the type we call 'anonymous') has begun Exploding With Wank.

Bah. OTP post. In the comments, squee about your OTP, whatever that may be. This is a squee post. Repeat, this is a squee post. Even if you squee about a pairing that I absolutely hate, I won't tell you so.

Global Shinkai Day - 28th February 2009
So tomorrow's Global Shinkai Day :D To celebrate, there's loads of exciting activities going on at Cherry Blossoms Falling to mark the occasion, so go have a look!

Also, Crunchyroll will be streaming all three of Shinkai's films for 24 hours, including the new dub of Five Centimetres Per Second: http://www.crunchyroll.com/group/Global_Shinkai_Day

So how are you guys gonna celebrate Global Shinkai Day? Marathon the movies? Have a flick through the artbook? Perhaps you could try and spread the Shinkai love by lending someone one of his DVDs? Tell us about it, enjoy it, and don't forget the tissues :D

Info on The Place Promised in Our Early Days manga?
Hello, everyone. ^_^

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the manga adaptation of The Place Promised in Our Early Days written by Makoto Shinkai and illustrated by Mizu Sahara.

I thought the adaptation for Voices of a Distant Star was a wonderful companion to Shinkai's film. I was hoping to see if the manga for The Place Promised in Our Early Days would be of the same calibre, but I don't think it has surfaced anywhere.

Life imitates Shinkai?
A long time ago, my mother was pining over somebody. She was very miserable for quite some time.

Then she met him by chance. By this point both were in other relationships. They became very good friends, and now he's my godfather and she's the godmother to his niece, and their relationship is one of very strong, almost spiritual friendship.

Then there's a friend of mine who's about thirty, whose life almost precisely telegraphed Akari's up until the point two or three years ago when a similar chance encounter led to her breaking off an engagement (the man was very understanding, at least according to her) to reconnect with the equivalent person (a woman, actually; said friend is bisexual) from her past. It wasn't the same, of course, and there wasn't as much limerence involved as there had once been, but they just celebrated their first civil-union anniversary.

Because I think about the intersections between art and reality a lot, I feel that  things like this could be a way to resolve my endless, admittedly PATHETIC quest for a Good Ending to Five Centimetres per Second. (Better than that ridiculous short story I posted earlier, anyway!) I think we've all been in Takaki and Akari's situation or at least know somebody who has been; does anybody else know of it mysteriously working out like this one did?

Shinkai meets Victorian and Jazz Age literature! --er, no, I don't know either.
I just wrote a short story crossing over Five Centimetres per Second with various classic novels. All that I'll say is that apparently Nick Carraway lives in Akari's basement and makes her sammiches.

I'm aware that this is probably some sort of blasphemy, both for a literature fan and for a Shinkai fan. Don't kill me too hard. )
